The Link Between Water Damage and Mold | SERVPRO of Bloomington

SERVPRO of Bloomington water and mold SERVPRO of Bloomington is here to help with water and mold damage

Water damage and mold growth share an intricate relationship that often goes unnoticed until it's too late. As professionals in the restoration industry, SERVPRO of Bloomington is well-acquainted with the subtle dance between water and mold, and how one can inevitably lead to the other.

The Silent Culprit

Water damage is like an uninvited guest that arrives unannounced, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake. Whether it's a burst pipe, a leaking roof, or a flooded basement, water intrusion can permeate every nook and cranny of a property. Little do homeowners realize that this moisture provides the perfect breeding ground for mold spores, setting the stage for a symbiotic relationship that can turn into a homeowner's nightmare.

Learning About Mold

Mold is a resilient organism, lurking in the shadows and thriving on moisture and organic materials. As water infiltrates a space, it becomes a catalyst for mold spores to awaken from their dormant state. Mold growth typically begins within 24-48 hours of water exposure, making swift action imperative to prevent a small water issue from escalating into a full-blown mold infestation.

The Domino Effect: How Water Damage Paves the Way for Mold

  1. Moisture as a Catalyst: Water creates an environment conducive to mold growth. Mold spores, omnipresent in the air, settle on damp surfaces and begin their reproductive cycle.

  2. Building Materials as a Buffet: Mold feeds on cellulose-rich materials present in walls, ceilings, and floors. As water saturates these materials, it provides sustenance for mold to flourish.

  3. Humidity as an Accelerant: Lingering moisture increases indoor humidity, creating an atmosphere where mold can thrive. Poor ventilation exacerbates the issue, trapping humid air and creating pockets of ideal conditions for mold colonization.

SERVPRO's Perspective: Nipping the Issue in the Bud

SERVPRO of Bloomington understands the urgency of addressing water damage promptly to curb mold growth. Through a multi-faceted approach, our experts tackle both the visible and invisible aspects of water damage:

  1. Rapid Water Extraction: Utilizing state-of-the-art equipment, SERVPRO swiftly removes standing water, preventing further saturation of building materials.

  2. Thorough Drying Processes: Our technicians employ advanced drying techniques to eliminate residual moisture, ensuring a dry environment that inhibits mold proliferation.

  3. Mold Remediation Expertise: In the unfortunate event that mold has taken hold, SERVPRO of Bloomington specializes in safe and effective mold remediation. This involves the identification and removal of mold-infested materials, thorough cleaning, and preventative measures to impede future growth.

Preventative Measures: Guarding Against Future Woes

SERVPRO of Bloomington emphasizes the importance of preventative measures to break the cycle of water damage and mold growth:

  1. Regular Inspections: Routine inspections can detect potential water issues before they escalate. Identifying and repairing leaks promptly can thwart mold's attempts to establish a foothold.

  2. Proactive Maintenance: Addressing maintenance issues, such as roof leaks and plumbing problems, can prevent water damage from occurring in the first place.

  3. Humidity Control: Proper ventilation and humidity control are crucial in mold prevention. SERVPRO recommends the use of dehumidifiers in damp areas to maintain optimal indoor humidity levels.

Conclusion: A Proactive Approach for a Mold-Free Tomorrow

In the intricate dance between water damage and mold growth, SERVPRO of Bloomington stands as a guardian, offering insights and solutions to break the cycle. By understanding the symbiotic relationship between these two adversaries, homeowners can take proactive measures to safeguard their properties and ensure a mold-free environment. Remember, in the battle against mold, time is of the essence, and SERVPRO of Bloomington is here to lend a helping hand, ensuring that water damage doesn't pave the way for mold infestation.

If you’ve ever experienced issues with mold, you know that it’s more than just an unsightly nuisance.

Mold can silently wreak havoc on your health and property. In this extensive guide, we will delve deep into the dangers of mold, how to detect its presence, and the indispensable role of professional mold remediation services. Whether you're dealing with mold removal, mold remediation, or the costs involved, this comprehensive resource will equip you with vital knowledge to protect your Bloomington, Indiana or Bedford, Indiana property.

Understanding Mold

Mold, a type of fungus, serves a vital role in nature by breaking down organic matter. However, when it infiltrates our indoor spaces, it can cause a multitude of issues. Let's explore the key aspects of mold:

• Health Risks: Exposure to mold can lead to a range of health problems. Mold spores are allergens that can trigger asthma, allergies, respiratory issues, and skin irritations.

• Black Mold (Stachybotrys chartarum): Often dubbed "toxic black mold," this species is particularly notorious for its mycotoxins, which can lead to severe health problems when inhaled or touched.

• Property Damage:P Mold thrives on organic materials like wood, drywall, and insulation, causing structural damage and costly repairs.

• Airborne Allergens: Mold releases allergenic proteins that can initiate allergies, even in individuals who haven't experienced them before.

• Mold Odor: Mold produces a distinct, musty odor that permeates the environment, making your indoor space uncomfortable and unwelcoming.

Identifying Mold Damage

Early detection is crucial for effective mold remediation. In many cases, it will be necessary to call a professional mold remediation company for mold testing. Mold often grows in concealed, inaccessible areas, rendering it invisible without professional help. Here are some telltale signs of mold damage:

• Visible Mold Growth: The most apparent indication is the presence of visible mold. It can manifest as fuzzy, discolored patches on walls, ceilings, or other surfaces.

• Musty Odor: An enduring, musty smell is a strong indicator of mold growth, even if you can't see it. This scent is a result of the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted by mold.

• Water Damage History: Properties with a history of water damage, flooding, or leaks are at higher risk for mold growth. Mold thrives in moist environments.

• Health Symptoms: If occupants experience unexplained health symptoms like coughing, sneezing, congestion, or skin irritation that improve when leaving the property, mold may be the culprit.

• Peeling Paint or Wallpaper: Mold can cause paint or wallpaper to peel or bubble as it grows beneath these surfaces.

The Mold Remediation Process

Mold remediation is a complex, regulated process aimed at identifying, containing, and eliminating mold to ensure the safety and health of occupants. Here's an overview of the standard mold remediation process:

Mold Inspection and Assessment

Before embarking on the remediation journey, a certified mold inspector evaluates the extent of the mold damage. They identify the type of mold, its location, and the underlying moisture source that fueled its growth.

Containment

Effective containment is vital to prevent mold spores from migrating to uncontaminated areas. Professionals utilize plastic sheeting and negative air pressure machines to isolate the affected area.

Mold Removal

The next stage involves the physical mold removal. Depending on the infestation's scale, this may entail removing and disposing of materials like drywall, insulation, or carpeting. Professionals wear personal protective equipment (PPE) and adhere to stringent safety protocols throughout this phase.

Mold Cleaning and Sanitization

All surfaces within the containment area undergo thorough cleaning and sanitization, utilizing specialized equipment and antimicrobial agents to eliminate any lingering mold spores.

Drying and Dehumidification

To prevent future mold growth, experts employ industrial-grade dehumidifiers and air movers to fully dry the affected space. Addressing the moisture source is pivotal in mold prevention.

Post-Remediation Testing

After remediation, a certified mold testing company may perform post-remediation testing to confirm the successful resolution of the mold issue and ensure safe indoor air quality.

Assessing Mold Remediation Costs

The cost of mold remediation can vary considerably based on factors such as the extent of the infestation, the type of mold, and its location within the property. Several factors may influence mold remediation costs:

Infestation Size: Larger mold infestations typically necessitate more extensive remediation efforts, leading to higher costs.

• Location Complexity: Mold in confined or challenging-to-reach areas may require additional labor and equipment, impacting the overall cost.

• Mold Type: Hazardous molds, including toxic black mold, may necessitate more elaborate safety measures, driving up costs.

• Structural Damage: Mold that has caused structural deterioration may entail expensive repairs, such as drywall replacement or subfloor restoration.

• Insurance Coverage: Depending on your insurance policy, a portion or the entirety of the remediation costs may be covered, reducing your financial burden.

It's crucial to remember that while mold remediation costs are a concern, the health and safety of occupants should take precedence. Cutting corners during mold remediation can result in incomplete removal and recurrent mold problems.

How to Take On Commercial Water Damage to Your Business | SERVPRO of Bloomington

8/11/2023 (Permalink)

Commercial Water Damage SERVPRO of Bloomington is your local commercial restoration company. We will always be here to help and get you back in business.

When commercial water damage affects your building, the impact on business can be severe.

Many sources of flooding come from internal sources. Burst pipes or a badly leaking roof can shut you down or ruin interiors and destroy inventory. Damage might also come from a bathroom flooded with sewage backup. Or it could even be an entire floor of offices soaked by a broken sprinkler system.

However, water damage can also affect businesses through natural causes. In Bloomington, we see a higher annual rainfall than most other places in the United States.

Knowing what to do before disaster strikes make recovering quickly and returning to business easier. Regardless of what source left the water behind, these helpful tips can guide you through handling the problem quickly and as stress-free as possible.

Know Your Building’s Layout

Familiarize yourself with different water cutoff points throughout your property, and ensure you know how to turn off the fire sprinkler system. Locate the main water cutoff valve, and be ready to shut off the entire building’s supply when necessary.

Several people should know this information, including members of the leadership team. This can help you reduce the amount of water that gets inside your business by cutting it off at the source.

Know the Types of Water Involved

When water damage happens, the type of water involved will determine how dangerous the situation is. Knowing what you’re dealing with makes a big difference in the safety of everyone in the building:

White water: This type of water most commonly results from plumbing problems. It’s not considered contaminated and is safe to handle yourself in small amounts.

Gray water: Sink drains and toilet tank overflows produce this type of flooding. The water is contaminated but not considered dangerous.

Black water: Sewage backups and storm flooding are common sources of highly contaminated black water. Always call in a professional to deal with this type of toxic water damage.

Take Action Quickly

Always attempt to identify and shut down the water source as soon as possible. Try to get fresh air circulating by opening windows and doors to expedite the drying and evaporation process. Then alert everyone in the building and outline the affected areas so that no one comes into contact with the water.

After taking these steps, be sure to thoroughly document any visible damage. This will help you speed through the insurance claim process and will be useful when deciding what parts of your building need the most reinforcement.

Remember to Be Patient

The visible water damage in your building is only part of the overall problem. Soaked wall studs, moldy framing and buckled flooring materials are only a few signs of hidden water damage. Any of these indicators should be red flags of potential damage.

If your business experiences water damage, call SERVPRO of Bloomington for a quick response and a shoulder to lean on. Our restoration professionals have extensive training and will work with industry-leading equipment that can dry your building out and get you back into action fast.

The cleanup and drying process can take up to a week, depending on the extent of the moisture, so be patient as our restoration team works through the cleanup and sanitation before beginning repairs. We’ll have your business back to preloss condition before you know it.

When disaster strikes your commercial property, we’ll be there to help clean up and get you back in business quickly. Call SERVPRO of Bloomington today at (812) 824-2027.

Sample analysis should follow analytical methods recommended by the American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA), the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH), or other professional organizations.

Are there federal regulations or standards regarding mold testing?

Standards or Threshold Limit Values (TLVs) for airborne concentrations of mold, or mold spores, have not been set. Currently, there are no EPA regulations or standards for airborne mold contaminants.

Understanding Mold

When water intrudes into your property, mold growth can start in as little as 48 hours. Consider the following mold facts:

  • Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
  • Mold spores are microscopic, float along in the air, and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
  • Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.
  • Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
  • Mold often produces a strong, musty odor, and that odor can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
  • Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.

Every mold damage scenario is different and requires a unique solution, but the general mold remediation process stays the same. Learn more about our mold remediation process.

Protect Your Bloomington Home From Water Damage

4/25/2023 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Bloomington water damage services. SERVPRO of Bloomington handles all water damage remediation needs.

There are many ways to help protect your Bloomington, Indiana home from water damages. Water losses occur when water finds its way outside of the appliances you rely on to run your household’s daily needs. When we think about the causes of severe water damage to our homes, we usually think about extreme weather like a hurricane or torrential rains. But the unfortunate reality is that extensive damage is often the result of ordinary household plumbing systems and appliances that fail – and these can be just as destructive to your home as an extreme weather event.

Preventative Measures

Fortunately, there are steps that you can take to help prevent water damage from plumbing problem in your Bloomington home. It is helpful to understand some of the common causes of water damage.

These may include:

• Heating and air-conditioning systems

• Water heaters

• Valves

• Appliances

• Pipes and plumbing fixtures

How to Detect Water Damages

Water damage can often go undetected, even if the telltale signs are there. Plumbing that is housed inside the walls of your home, in less-trafficked areas like a basement or attic, or behind a cabinet or appliance, can easily go unnoticed. That’s why it’s important to check your appliances and plumbing from time to time.

  • Know where the main water supply enters your home, locate the main shut-off valve and make sure it’s functioning properly.
  • If you will be away from home for an extended period, consider shutting off the water supply, but consult with a heating professional first to understand if doing so will compromise any other systems in your home. Maintain a temperature of at least 55 degrees in your home. Also, if your home is protected by a fire sprinkler system, do not turn off the water to this system, and maintain sufficient heat to prevent a freeze-up.
  • Consider having your air-conditioning system inspected regularly by a professional. Check around the unit for indications of leaks. Check the drain lines annually and clean them if they are clogged. Change the air filter annually at a minimum.
  • Inspect water heaters, showers, tubs, toilets, sinks, dishwashers, refrigerators and washing machines annually, and have them repaired if there are signs of leaks or corrosion. Be sure to include supply lines, hoses, connections and fittings in the inspection.
  • Check caulking around showers, bathtubs, sinks and toilet bases, and make repairs as needed.
  • If your refrigerator has an ice machine or water dispenser, check the hose between the wall and the refrigerator to determine if it is pinched or stressed. Also look for signs of leaking or wear and tear.
  • Check exposed plumbing (pipes, valves, etc.) for signs of leaking or corrosion. Have any pipe damage fixed immediately to prevent more costly repairs in the future.

For any questions or concerns about water damage in your home, call SERVPRO of Bloomington at (812) 824-2027

Water damage due to a plumbing issue in your home can be life-changing. But there are some common signs that homeowners can look for, and steps they can take, to help avoid a major water issue at home.

Consider this example:

A homeowner and his family head off for a three-week vacation. While they’re away, a minor toilet leak grows, until it reaches a pace of three gallons of water per minute. By the time the homeowners returned from their three-week vacation, the unaddressed leak had poured more than 30,000 gallons of water into their home. The water ruined furniture, fixtures and irreplaceable family valuables, and rendered the property virtually uninhabitable for an extended period of time.

But this is just a cautionary tale. The following guidance is meant to help you learn about the potential water issues from common plumbing problems and how you can take steps to help prevent disaster.

Causes For Plumbing Problems

Plumbing issues can occur anywhere in your home. Frequently, lack of maintenance is the root cause of these problems. However, other causes can include:

  • Manufacturing and design defects.
  • Installation errors.
  • Exposure to cleaning products (for example, by storing chemicals under the sink or by cleaning surfaces of plumbing components).

If caught early, many plumbing problems can be addressed before serious damage occurs. For this reason, regular inspection of your home’s visible plumbing parts can be critical. Knowing the lifespan of parts and appliances is also important, as is properly maintaining the other parts of your home and its features and systems.

Signs to Look For

Want to help prevent plumbing complications from damaging your home and potentially resulting in expensive property damage or loss? Start by visually inspecting your plumbing on a regular basis. Look for drips and slow leaks. Be sure to check the areas surrounding your pipes as well. If you see water damage on cabinetry or other nearby materials, there may be an active leak that you’ll want to locate.

Your entire home plumbing system may not be visible, but there are certain places in your home where you can readily inspect plumbing components:

  • Under sinks and washtubs.
  • Inside access panels near showers, sinks or appliances.
  • Attachments to toilets, water heaters and appliances.
  • Basements and crawl spaces.

You will want to look at any piping, valves and fittings in the areas listed above. Leaks are most common at connection points, so pay close attention to the plumbing connections on faucets, washing machines, refrigerators, dishwashers, water heaters, water filtration systems, shut-off valves and toilets. Your home’s piping system may also have multiple connections between various sections of pipe. Appliances and fixtures themselves can cause problems, so be sure to inspect those as well, and keep up with any regular maintenance recommended by the manufacturer.

The signs of a problem will vary by component. For example, problems in copper piping may look very different from problems in PEX, a common type of plastic piping. In general, you want to look for signs of corrosion, cracking, hazing, discoloration and mineral deposits from a water leak.

Within four hours of a loss notification (and usually much earlier), SERVPRO of Bloomington will be on-site to help ensure a fire damage is handled properly by utilizing the following services:

Structural Cleaning

After a smoke or fire damage, ceilings, walls, woodwork, carpeting, and floors will often need a thorough cleaning. SERVPRO® will pretest to determine the extent of damage, then use the specific equipment and cleaning products required to clean and protect the different types of surfaces found within the structure.

Contents Cleaning

All the restorable contents in the affected areas will be professionally cleaned and deodorized. This includes area rugs, furniture, draperies, and upholstery. SERVPRO can provide wet or dry-cleaning services. Additionally, all other restorable contents will be cleaned and deodorized to preloss condition. This includes electronics, art, wood furniture, kitchen items, clothing, bedding, and much more. Finally, SERVPRO of Bloomington can provide an inventory list of all “to be claimed” items.

Deodorization

SERVPRO of Bloomington provides specialized services that rid your insured’s home or place of business of offensive odors left behind by fire or smoke damage. We do not merely cover up lingering odors with a fragrance; we seek out the sources of the odor and remove them.

WATER DAMAGE

If you have recently become a victim of commercial water damage, you may be wondering what you can do to mitigate your damages. There is a critical period in which certain actions must be taken to preserve as much of your property as possible and to decrease any health risks when water damage has occurred in a commercial space.

Preparing a Space for Water Damage Restoration

Before you enter your commercial space or any flooded building, you will need to make sure the electrical power to the structure is shut off. You should also be aware that during a flooding event, small animals or reptiles tend to seek shelter inside of buildings. Be prepared to deal with the discovery of wild animals in your space.

Protect yourself from entering any flooded building by wearing an organic vapor respirator. You can purchase these at any local paint and building supply stores. You also want to have rubber gloves, protective clothing, and eye protection. The first thing you should do is ventilate the affected areas by opening the windows and placing fans where possible.

Unfortunately, there likely will be items that you need to throw away. Any items that are porous and have absorbed contaminated floodwater cannot be restored. If your commercial space has drywall, mattresses, pillows, box springs, particle board, carpets or carpet pads, these will need to be discarded if they have become saturated. However, there is good news: If you have clothing or household fabrics that can be machine-washed, you may be able to salvage them. Use your washing machine to clean these items with a 10-minute soak at the minimum in hot water with detergent. The soap and normal wash should remove most of the contamination and any staining that is present.

Be aware that your commercial space will need a thorough professional inspection, cleaning and possibly restructuring. Water damaged walls and installations must be removed and repaired, and pockets of saturation should be exposed for drying and sanitizing. Always remember that mold growth could take a few days to appear as it thrives in a moist environment with organic-type materials such as paper or particle board and in temperatures that range between 60 and 86 degrees Fahrenheit. Keep good airflow throughout the interior environment, and maintain moderate temperatures to decrease the risk of any mold growth. It is also important that you let your space dry out before any rebuilding occurs.

If you would like more information on any of the services listed above, please call SERVPRO of Bloomington at (812) 824-2027.

Storm Warning Vs. Watch

6/18/2021 (Permalink)

We’ve all seen or heard the warning, but in many instances we always get storm warnings and watches mixed up.  When you hear the weather warning on the radio or television be sure you know the differences between the two.

These warnings and watches apply to the seasonality of storms from winter, summer, spring and fall, as well as be used for precipitation alerts.

A weather WATCH means that there are elements that exist for the potential development of severe weather. When this weather alert happens, it's a good idea to refresh yourself on your emergency evacuation or safety plans but you don’t need to act on them during this alert.

A weather WARNING indicates that severe weather is in your area or it is already occurring based on either the severe weather has been spotted or is showing on weather radar. It is during this weather alert it's important to act on your emergency plans to ensure safety.

For any severe weather event, you can count on the Professionals at SERVPRO of Bloomington to assist you if your home is damaged in any weather event. Give them a call today at 812-824-2027.

Fire Safety Tips

6/13/2021 (Permalink)

There are several ways to ensure your safety from a house fire. The American Red Cross has data listed on their website at www.redcross.org to help individuals be as prepared as they can be for a house fire.

  • Installation of smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are very important and can often be the first alert you can have when a fire starts.
  • With any smoke and carbon monoxide detector it is essential to test them once a month to make sure they are operating. Even though sealed detectors are typically good for 10 years, you still need to test them monthly.
  • Create a fire escape plan for your family. That way everyone knows where to meet or be found in the event of a fire.
  • Install fire extinguishers in rooms where heat sources are prevalent such as kitchens and garages

Continual training and in-home maintenance will help keep you safe from home fires. For any fire damage, trust in the experts at SERVPRO of Bloomington to help repair your home from damages. For any other questions call 812-824-2027

How To Tell If Your Water Heater Is Failing

3/29/2021 (Permalink)

Its something we never really check on yet we depend on it every day. It's our water heater. We've recently seen several calls for water and even mold remediation after a water heater failure.

From a lack of hot water, small leaks and even a whole house full of water, there are several ways to know before it goes:

  • From no hot water or inconsistent hot water availability
  • You notice any water around the water heater
  • Reduction of hot water flow
  • Odd odors or discolored water
  • Any sounds out of the ordinary
  • Older water heater units

Unfortunately what we see the most is large amounts of water into the home from a failed water heater.

It's not only the water that is the concern, it's the chance of mold forming in those areas as well.

Spring Showers Bring....

3/19/2021 (Permalink)

Spring showers bring basement flooding....or is it May flowers? Either way with winter out of the way and those heavy showers hitting we're seeing an influx of flooded basements. In some instances we can prevent those pesky showers from coming into our homes:

1. Making sure all gutters are clear of debris and that all downspouts from the gutters are extended beyond the foundation. Although they may not be pretty, during these heavy spring rains its beneficial to get them as far away from the home as possible. Doing this will help keep water from trying to flow back into the basement.

2. Test sump pumps. Easiest way is to take a 5-gallon bucket and fill up the sump well. Ensure the sump pump is able to pump the well water level down. Also be sure that the sump pump is clear of any obstacles so that the float or lift is able to activate the pump.

3. Also for those in low lying areas, check your crawlspace to ensure that there is no standing water in your crawlspace. Standing water in your crawlspace invites unwanted mold to begin forming in an along the foundation walls and floor joists.

For any water damage that does occur, don't hesitate to call your local SERVPRO office today at 812-824-2027

What To Look For To Prevent Roof Leaks

3/3/2021 (Permalink)

You might have noticed water on your ceiling after a heavy rain or from snow melt. Though most homeowners aren’t roofers or in the roofing business, there are a few ways to inspect your roof before leaks happen.

  1. Inspect flashing - Inspect areas around where any plumbing vents, attic vents or chimneys extend above the roof. Check around those areas to also ensure any sealants around those areas are free of damage or cracks.
  2. Check for holes - Easier said than done on some roofs. Falling limbs or branches can puncture roofs after a storm. It's always a best practice to inspect your roof after any limb or branch falls on it.
  3. Check for missing or damaged shingles on your roof.

Water is always tricky in how it travels, so even though you might see where it's damaging your sheetrock from inside your home, the water may have found a different access point to get in.

The best tip is to call the professionals at SERVPRO of Bloomington if that water makes it into your home. They have all the right tools to inspect and correct damage from water leaks and make sure mold won’t form.

The benefits of Air Filtration in your home.

12/4/2020 (Permalink)

HEPA FILTRATION

Did you know that Air filtration is a great way to keep harmful impurities that affect your health away from your family. Using an air purifier has numerous benefits as well, but you need to know which one is best capable of removing noxious (harmful, poisonous, or unpleasant) mold spores. Find out which types  of air purifiers are most effective at accomplishing a clean and healthy environment.

Air Purification Health Benefits

Besides removing mold spores and floating fungal particles, air purifiers generate atmospheres that are:

  • Clean
  • Odorless
  • Dustless
  • Free From Pet Dander

HVAC attachments reduce the burden placed upon your device, subsequently extending its life.
Although most purifiers can achieve the above objectives with ease, not all are as effective at eliminating mold spores. Making the right choice of air filtration is crucial if you want to keep your Bloomington Indiana home free from a situation requiring the services of a mold removal specialist.

Styles of Air Purification
Assuming your primary goal is to remove aerial fungi, one of your best options is a purifier that includes a HEPA (high efficiency particulate air) filter. These filters are able to remove 99.97% of particles 0.3 microns or larger and machines equipped with a HEPA filter can dramatically improve your home’s air quality. Be certain to regularly change you HEPA filter on a regularly scheduled basis, as failure to do so can result in captured spores escaping.
Your other superior choice is a Photo Electrochemical Oxidizer. Using light activation to destroy air particles, an oxidizer is capable of actually eradicating airborne offenders instead of merely trapping them.
Many other systems exist, but none are better than either of the above selections. Photocatalytic oxidizers, for instance, can expunge some organic molecules, but they are highly inefficient. Ozone generators flood your residence with this peculiar-smelling form of oxygen on purpose, a bad idea for those with certain sensitivities. Carbon filter purifiers, which trap gasses, are totally incapable of removing fungus spores.
Keep your residence in St. Louis clear of mold growth through the use of effective air filtration, making sure that whichever model you pick is capable of handling the job.

What is an Ozone Generator?

11/22/2020 (Permalink)

Ozone Generators

If you have ever had a fire on your property and had SERVPRO come out to restore, you will know what an ozone generator is. For those who have not, an ozone generator is a machine that charges the air around it creating O3 out of the O2 molecules we breathe.

What We Use Ozone For

The primary function that we use an ozone generator for is the eliminate odors, especially odors caused by fires. We can use this technique of odor removal in many different cases such as, clothing, furniture, and entire rooms no matter the size. While the odor removal works great, there is a downside to using ozone in excess.

Precautions to Ozone

As stated earlier, ozone is different from the air we breathe. This reaction makes O3 poisonous if it is ingested in excess. This is why we close off the area that is being deodorized during the process. You can trust that we take every precaution necessary to keep our customers and employees safe.

If you experience a fire loss, give SERVPRO of Bloomington a call at (812) 824-2027.

It's Candle Fire Season!

11/2/2020 (Permalink)

A diffuser is a much safer alternative to burning candles

Be Cautious When Using Candles

Yes, that soft light and aromatic fragrances that fill the room from a lit candle can be an easy way to create the atmosphere that you want in your home. However, candles can also become a safety hazard if they are not used properly. Candle fires are common, but the following tips can help you avoid them.

1. Don’t Leave Burning Candles Unattended:
It may seem like an annoyance to extinguish a candle every time you leave the room. However, leaving it burning could result in a candle fire if something gets too close to the flame or if it burns too low. It is best to blow out candles before going to bed at night, even if the candle is in the same room you sleep in..

2. Keep Them Away From Flammable Items:
When you are using a candle, you should be sure to have the area free of flammable objects. This can include papers as well as fabrics such as curtains and bedding. These types of items should be at least a foot away from any candles that are in use. Flammable liquids should be kept even further away.

3. Keep Them Out of Reach of Pets and Children:
Both children and pets often come with an excess of energy and curiosity. For this reason, it can be easy for them to inadvertently start a candle fire. Keep burning candles in an area that are not within reach of a child or pet, especially unsupervised!

4. Use an Alternative:
Perhaps the easiest way to prevent a is simply not to use candles at all. There are a variety of other ways that you can achieve a more relaxing home environment. If you are only interested in adding a nice scent to your home, a wax warmer is a great option. One great option is a diffuser. Diffusers are a great alternative to candles and make you house smell fantastic!

While these tips can help you prevent an emergency, accidents can still occur. Whether it is small or large, fires often require smoke cleanup and some repairs. If this happens, a fire damage restoration company like SERVPRO can help return your home to its preloss condition making it "Like it never even happened."

Cleaning Contents After a Fire

  •  Make Sure It's Safe To Start

Your first concern in every fire damage restoration disaster is safety.  SERVPRO takes steps to make sure all workers entering your home or business after a fire are safe. It is important that the structure is safe before the evaluation and restoration process begins.

Also, keep in mind that, after a fire, indoor air contains floating smoke and soot particles. Smoke/soot particles are Products of Incomplete Combustion (PIC). These are carcinogens and are dangerous. When cleaning up smoke/soot, it is important to wear a respirator, such as an N-95 or N-100. Using gloves and other protective clothing will also protect against soot exposure. Ventilation is key to letting the contaminants in the air outside.

  • Evaluating Damaged Contents

The next step is to determine which items should be cleaned and where, as well as which items to discard. Cost and antique value are key consideration factors. SERVPRO inspects the affected items as quickly as possible, as soot can produce further damage or corrode contents and appliances in a matter of hours or days, depending on the material.

In many cases, contents that have been damaged directly by the fire or by excessive heat should not be discarded until inspected. SERVPRO knows how to clean smoke damage from salvageable items like this antique chair (pictured).

Most textile goods like draperies and bedding will be taken to our laundry division or dry-cleaning facility. Other contents that can be restored, such as furniture, may be cleaned within the home or sent to our facility.

Food items must be treated with caution. Any open items should be thrown away. Unopened items in original packaging that were away from the heat can be considered safe. If there is any doubt, throw the items away.

Keep in mind that melted or discolored plastic items can’t be restored, only cleaned.

  •  Inventory Of Your Contents

If a “pack out” (removing contents out of the structure where damage occurred) is necessary, our SERVPRO technicians will keep careful records for items taken, location of the items, and condition of the items when removed. In other cases, we may determine that conditions allow for cleaning and storing the contents within the home, or perhaps a garage if property has one. An inventory of all discarded items is essential to receiving monetary reimbursement when filing an insurance claim.

  •  Contents Cleaning

SERVPRO will perform testing to determine the appropriate product to clean your contents. Today’s restoration professionals will use environmentally friendly products for all cleaning and restoration processes. This is an important consideration when choosing a restoration company.

SERVPRO begins to remove soot from each restorable item — either in the home or at our facility. The cleaning method depends on the item, such as furniture, kitchen utensils, dishes, toys, clothing, bedding, draperies, and more.

  • Removing Odors

Pungent odors come with smoke/soot damage. After the cleaning process, most of the smoke odor will be eliminated. Yet, if there is still a small odor, we may add an additional step to the restoration process. This could include ozone or hydroxyl deodorizing. Learn more about processes: ODOR REMOVAL

Have You Checked Your Gutter System Lately?

10/27/2020 (Permalink)

Clogged Gutters

Now that we are well into the fall season, SERVPRO of Bloomington wants to remind homeowners about an important functioning item we tend to overlooked each year, your gutters.
Although you may not think about it, the state of your gutters can affect many other areas of your family's property, which includes your roof and foundation. If your gutters fail to function they way they are intended to do they can wreck havoc on your home or business . The most common problem that homeowners face with their gutters is that they fail to drain or channel excess rainwater far enough away from your foundation. That excess water can back up under your home's foundation or into your basement. If rain water doesn't travel through your gutters freely, it's most likely because the gutters are clogged with leaves or debris. This is especially common during this season when trees are dropping their leaves. If you have clogged gutters it can often lead to costly foundation repairs that can cost thousands of dollars. Having your gutters regularly cleaned (at least once or twice a year) can prevent a major water damage from happening to your property.

if you are concerned about your gutters not functioning property, SERVPRO of Bloomington encourages you to have them inspected by a qualified company to avoid any future water damage from gutters that are clogged.

When water backs up into your basement our foundation, it very well may be a gutter system that is not functioning properly. Be sure and call the cleanup team that is "Faster To Any Size Disaster" in the event water damage strikes your home or business.

Holiday Weekend!

8/29/2019 (Permalink)

Labor Dayis a day to rest from the work place and enjoy some down time. A long standing tradition that many spend a lot of time planning and preparing for. Backyard barbecues and family gatherings , camping trips and vacations are frequently planned for this holiday! There are however many things that get overlooked in preparation for the time away on these trips that can cause the weekend to end badly. Preparing your residence might take a few extra steps but is always a good idea. Before you head out on your vacation, take a few minutes to safe guard your home. The following steps can help insure your return to be a pleasant one. Unplugging unnecessary appliances to prevent possible fires is top of the list. Fires spread rapidly and you will not be there to stop it. Unplugging appliances that can get hot or just simply short out should always be done before you leave. Turning off water is also a good idea. Shut off valves to sinks and showers can prevent water damage from pipes going bad and can save you a fortune! Leaving a light on such as a low wattage lamp visible to the outside can give the appearance of someone home is also a nice deterrent to possible problems. Whenever possible, ask a neighbor to keep an eye out for strangers possibly hanging around your property while you’re gone. These are all little steps but can make a huge difference in your return home.

We here at SERVPRO hope you have a safe and happy holiday!

Spring Time Inspection

3/18/2019 (Permalink)

As spring is getting closer, more rain seems likely so it might be a great time to inspect your gutters to see if they might need some maintenance. Gutters full of debris can cause a lot of water damage. You should inspect them frequently. If they are full and clogging the downspouts, the overflow of water could be going in all the wrong places such as your walls. Water damage can become a major issue if not handled quickly. Checking things such as the guttering and outdoor water spickets can help prevent huge problems as well as prevent huge expenses. Regular maintenance is key to preventing water damage on the outside. For people with outdoor pools and fountains, checking all hoses and connectors is a great idea and should be a part of your spring time inspection as well! We can't always prevent all types of water damage but the ones we can will help to minimize the possibility! Take a little time now for your own peace of mind! We see a lot of water damage at SERVPRO that could have been prevented! Create your own spring time inspection list and enjoy your spring!

Fire Prevention

3/13/2019 (Permalink)

Fire due to burning candle

This fire started because a candle was left burning unsupervised. Fire prevention is the best way to prevent disasters like this one. Here is some measures you might take to prevent this from happening to you.

  • Kitchen fires – Most are caused by leaving items unattended on the stove or oven when cooking. You can prevent them by being more watchful of the stove and not allowing things to distract you from paying attention or outright forgetting that you are cooking. Set a reminder or alarm to remind you that something needs checked if you are multitasking. When you are busy, it is easy to forget just how long something has been cooking.
  • Heaters – Many people use heaters for extra warmth. You should always be very careful of the positioning of these heaters. Some get very hot and can easily cause fire to items close to it. Always make sure there is ample space all around your heat sources. Always have them clean and always have them maintained properly. Make sure you get your furnace cleaned and checked every year as well. Proper maintenance can prevent a disaster!
  • Electrical Equipment – Always make sure your power cords to your appliances are in good condition. Bare wires and loss plugs can cause a fire. Make sure you are using extension cords for temporary use or if necessary, for longer time, make sure you have a high-quality heavy-duty extension cord. Cheaply made extension cords are not meant for long time use. Surge protectors are also very helpful but make sure they are high quality and made for the intended use. It is always good to check your outlets regularly also for any damages. A broken one is never a good idea.
  • Smoking – Smoking in or around the house has been a huge source of fires. Leaving a lit cigarette unattended or falling asleep with a cigarette should always be a main concern. Most all house fires caused from smoking could have been prevented. Always make sure your cigarette is firmly seated in the tray and never have one lit when you are at risk of falling asleep. Furthermore, do not leave matches or lighters in reach of young children who might play with them. Lit candles should always be supervised as well.
  •  Faulty Wiring – Older wiring in older homes might not be safe. Safety precautions have changed a lot when it comes to safe wiring. Older homes are more likely to have worn and frayed wiring and are more likely to spark and catch fire. One should always get the wiring checked by a certified electrician to ensure safety. Dealing with electrical issues should be handled by trained professionals only!

One should always practice safety by making sure all smoke detectors are checked and all fire extinguishers are in perfect working order at all times. Be smart and be safe!

Tammy and Marie 2019 Bloomington HomeShow!

At the Bloomington Home Show this year, we were able to meet a lot of individuals. There was a very nice turn out and I believe it was a huge success. We met members of so many different companies from the Monroe County area and learned a lot. Though the list is too many to mention here, there were representatives from many businesses such as Lindsay Schnarr with State Farm Insurance, Hazen Insurance, Shelter, Taylor Insurance, Southside Rentals, Aqua Pro Pools, Bender Lumber, Stoll’s Cabinets, Newhouse Construction, Well’s Lawncare, Koontz Construction, Carpets Plus, Sam’s Club, Williams Brothers Health Care, Black Lumber, RCV Roofing as well as Owen County State Bank, I.U. Credit Union, German American Bank and Express Employment. That is just some of the businesses there. Many other businesses participated as well. There was a lot of really nice door prizes. There was also some excellent food to be had from Chick-Fil-A, Great White Smoke, Red Frazier Bidon and La Pablano.  I would also like to thank Tommy D's for the best cup of coffee!! We look forward to another great year and next year’s Bloomington Home Show!

Working with the damaged area

Portion of Train Town!!!!

We have seen a lot of different situations and each has its own plan to correct the issue. In this case, we have water damage at a residence due to flooding. The residence has an extremely detailed and in depth train community. The entire setup of train and the town are up on stilts. Extracting the area with an RX20 was not an option due to all the legs from the train town every few feet. It was not possible to get more than a wand in between the legs, and it would have been almost impossible to relocate the entire setup. Our technician had to do some seriously planning. He used a a special mix of our fans and the dehumidifiers set to not disturb the client's hard work. Although complicated, we at SERVPRO kept the client and their town right on track!
